About Valdosta State University

Valdosta State University, or VSU for short, is an American public university, located in Valdosta, which is the county seat of Lowndes County, situated in the US state of Georgia, having a population estimated at a number of more than 45 000 inhabitants, during the 2006 census. Valdosta is also known as the Azalea City, due to the abundance of azaleas in the city, and it hosts, annually, the Azalea Festival, which happens in March.

VSU was founded in 1906, being opened in January 1913, as South Georgia State Normal College (SGSNC), with only three college freshmen and 15 sub freshmen. Nine years later, the school became a four-year college and the legislature changed its name to Georgia State Women's College, which became Valdosta State College, around 1950. In 1933, after numerous programs were added and the existing courses were upgraded, the institution adopted its current name.

Since it first opened its doors to students, VSU has continuously grown, having today an enrollment approximated at a number of more than 12 000 students, both undergraduates and graduates, offering various educational programs at degree levels which include Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's, Education Specialist, and Doctoral, provided through the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education, Arts, and Nursing, including the Graduate School, which contains the Divisions of Social Work and Library Science.

Athletics

VSU's athletic teams are known as the Valdosta State Blazers, who compete in NCAA Division II, in various sports, for both men and women, including in football, in which they won the 2007 NCAA Division II national football championship, by defeating Northwest Missouri State 25-20, and the 2004 NCAA Division II national championship with a 36-31 win over Pittsburg State University, tennis, in which they won the 2006 NCAA Division II national championship with a 5-2 win over Lynn University, and baseball, in which saw 34 winning seasons, 2 conference titles, 3 Divisional titles, 8 trips to the national tournament, and a Division II national championship in 1979, under the caching skills of Tommy Thomas.
